Our First 30 Years of Homeschooling- Lessons Learned from 3 decades of teaching 14 kids

Rick Boyer and his wife have been home schooling since 1980.  Starting out young and green in a time when only a handful of families was home schooling, Rick and Marilyn found few resources to help them in their journey.  They had to blaze their own trail, surviving such obstacles as skeptical grandparents, hostile school authorities, unhelpful curriculum publishers, blizzards, Indian attacks…(just kidding).  The Boyers are still home schooling today and now share their experiences around the world through their books and their speaking ministry.  Rick will share some of the most profound lessons learned along the way, including:

It’s not schooling, it’s discipleship

Life is the curriculum

The kid is the can

Socialization is for socialists

George Washington survived without Little League

-and many more!

Passing the Family Torch

Passing the Family Torch

What is life really like in a large home schooling family?  And what is life like for the children who have grown up and started families of their own?  Was their own upbringing a good preparation for adulthood and parenting?  You’ll learn the answers to these and many other questions from home schooling pioneers Rick and Marilyn Boyer, along with several of their adult children in this exciting and encouraging workshop.  Hear about the difficulties and triumphs, mistakes made and lessons learned in a 30-year home schooling adventure.  And there will be audience participation, so bring your own questions too

Starting Right- Staying Right
The key to successful home schooling is to have a true understanding of what it’s all about in God’s frame of reference. Curriculum, values education, social learning and priorities are all addressed in the Bible. In this practical, encouraging presentation by Rick Boyer, you will see that God has a dynamic plan for growing up. Here’s how you as a parent can cooperate with Him in making your home a launching pad for champions!

The Socialization Trap
Many home educators are intimidated by the common myth that children who are taught at home are at a disadvantage in social development. Rick Boyer draws on Scripture, scientific research and the experience of thousands of home-teaching families to show that the opposite is true. To prepare children for the real world, they need to be in the real world: family, church, and community - not locked away from society in age-segregated schools. This session will help you respond to the constant challenge: "What about socialization?"

What's a Dad to Do?
There are plenty of misconceptions about the role of the father in a home schooling family. Some people think that if he can’t be at home during “school time” he can’t be involved. Others think his job is to take over some of Mom’s chores in order to free her to spend more time with the children. But Scripture gives seven functions of a father in a godly home, and each of these can be applied very practically and powerfully in home education. Enjoy the wisdom and humor of this presentation as Rick answers the question of "What's A Dad to Do?"

Child Discipline
As the father of fourteen children, Rick Boyer knows the importance of obedience to a peaceful and productive home. Here he shares, from Scripture and his own experience, the principles that make child training a loving relationship rather than a set of behavior modification techniques.

Proverbs: God's Character Curriculum
If you were the wisest man in the world, what would you teach your children? You can learn the answer to that question by understanding the Old Testament book of Proverbs. There, a man specially chosen as a son by God records for his own sons, the most important lessons of wisdom and knowledge. Here is a practical application for the Book of Wisdom, including several ways to teach it to your children.

Making Learning Fun
Thomas Edison was one of the greatest geniuses our country ever produced. Part of the reason for his brilliance was the fact that, after attending school for only three months, he was educated at home by his mother, who believed that learning can be fun. Her philosophy paid off, as it has for thousands of other home educators who have broken free from bondage to the "institutional" approach and returned to natural, sensible ways of teaching. Stop making a school of yourself! This workshop gives eight simple suggestions that can revolutionize your child's learning and make home education fun for the whole family.

Careers without College
More and more colleges are welcoming, and even advertising for, home educated students. But just as college is not the only means of acquiring a higher education, neither is it the only way of preparing for a rewarding career. This workshop discusses the routes taken by several prominent Americans who reached the pinnacle of their chosen fields without attending college.

The History of Godless Education in America
Most people assume that the public school system exists because our forefathers saw a need for government to take a key role in helping to educate America's children. The truth of the matter, however, is that education in our country was much better before public education came into being than it is now, when we are spending over $6,000 per year on each student. You may be shocked to learn that the public school system in America grew from roots in philosophies diametrically opposed to the Bible and the tenets of American constitutional liberties. You are probably aware that modern Americans are less literate, less patriotic and less committed to freedom than previous generations. What you may not realize is that this is no accident!

Raising Cain - And Abel (A Look at Sibling Rivalry)
Scripture records the stories of several cases of strife between siblings. In almost every case, there is a principle involved which the parents have violated, sowing destruction in their family. This series of case studies gives valuable insight into the causes --- and therefore, the cures - of sibling rivalry.

Beyond the Textbooks
Before mass compulsory schooling, students learned to investigate, reason, and form independent attitudes. Today's home educating parents are discovering many exciting ways to get beyond packaged curriculum and experience real books, real experiences, real relationships-real learning!

Making a Difference: the Family Impacting Society
God has not called Christians to be influenced by society around them, but to be salt and light in that society. Every family must instill children with a sense of mission and equip them with methods to shine a light into the darkness of our community, city, and nation.

Some Things We've Learned : Lessons From Three Decades of Home Education
When the Boyers started home educating in 1980, they were typical young parents with the typical misunderstanding of what education is all about. Since then, our two decades of home schooling have brought many suprises-many of them life-changing. Rick Boyer

Reclaiming the American Vision
What happened to old-fashioned patriotism? Many Americans have forgotten our Godly national roots, but home schooling parents can reverse the process and train a generation of Christian patriots who will "raise up the old foundations". Rick Boyer

Heroes-Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
An important part of parenthood is giving our children a legacy of heroes to inspire and challenge them. Such children will grow into wise and prominent adults who will one day be examples to succeeding generations. Rick Boyer

The Homeschooling Family and the Church
Parents who decline to put their children in their church's Christian school or youth group are sometimes viewed as odd or rebellious. Rather than reacting or withdrawing home schoolers must take the initiative in the church and be examples of families who really minister. Rick Boyer

What is an Education?
Many people succeed in school but fail in the real world outside. Real education prepares the student for every aspect of life-practical,professional,spiritual,economic,civic. Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Those things that make us most useful for service add up to a real education. Rick Boyer

How They Did it-Home Schooled Heroes
Many of the most important and best-educated people in history-Washington,Lincoln, Edison, Franklin, John Quincy Adams--spent little or no time in school. Learn from their experiences how to educate your children for greatness. Rick Boyer

Things I Wish I'd Known
Growing up has never been easy, and today it is harder than ever before. In fact, America leads the world in teen suicide! But guidance from those who have been through it is as useful as the services of a wilderness guide. In this talk, Rick Boyer looks at the teen years from the "other side" and shares how God's principles give vision and victory for the young person who wants to be more than ordinary!

Breaking the Shackles-Why Parents Should Trust Themselves, Not Schools
To those who understand history, the hand of God is unmistakable in the story of America. Our Founders built on the soil of the New World a nation organized on the principles of Scripture. The result was that early America astounded the world with its freedom, genius and productivity. But when the training of children shifted from the realm of the family and moved into the realm of government, it took only a few generations to bring about the social, spiritual, moral and intellectual decay that permeates our society today. Now, home educating parents are taking back their children and raising up a generation of bright, godly, competent Americans who understand their heritage and are determined to reclaim it for the glory of God. God the designed the family, not the school to be the primary training ground for His champions. This session makes a good keynote speech.

Homeschooling- Making it Simple!
Faced by the bewildering selection of curriculum and learning theories available today, home schooling parents often feel intimidated and inadequate. Is learning really so complicated? And if so, why did America have a nearly universal literacy rate at the time of our founding, when nobody knew we have a right and left brain? There's no need to stand in the middle of an exhibit hall and hyperventilate! Join Rick Boyer in following the lead of great minds in Scripture and history as we learn how to maximize learning and minimize stress.

Learning: So Easy You Can Do It in Your Sleep!
Psalm 16:7 says, “I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed my mind instructs me in the night.” Deuteronomy chapter 6 tells us to teach God's Word to our children when they lie down and rise up. Why is this so important? What does it mean? Scientific research has clearly demonstrated the power of sleep in learning. Now learn how to make powerful use of some of the most important hours of your child's day!

Anyone Can Be A Storyteller: Bringing Learning to Life
For thousands of years, people have used stories to communicate learning. Jesus, the Master Teacher, often chose parables to get important points across to His disciples. In this workshop, Rick Boyer shares simple principles of storytelling that can make any parent—even shy or nonverbal types—a more effective communicator and teacher.

Son of a Single Mom: Hope for Families Without Fathers
Having grown up in a single-parent family, Rick Boyer has seen firsthand the difficulties and challenges that confront single mothers. This workshop discusses those problems and applies Biblical solutions for what Dr. James Dobson has called "The world's hardest job."

The Home Schooling Family And The Church
Parents who decline to put their children in their church's Christian school or youth activities are sometimes viewed as odd or rebellious. Rather than reacting or withdrawing, home schoolers must take the initiative in the church and be examples of families who really minister.

Teaching Character Through History
Perhaps the most important way in which children learn good character is through the example of others. Fortunately for American parents, our history is replete with people who were models of both brilliance and virtue. Rick Boyer discusses how to use the lives of giants in American history to motivate your children to aspire to greatness.

Take Back the Land

It has been said that the parents of the 1980's and 90's were the Moses generation--they left Egypt (government schooling) and headed for the Promised Land, as the Israelites once traversed the wilderness to return to Canaan.  The generation of Moses completed part of the mission, getting as far as the Jordan River.
But it was left to Joshua and the younger Israelites to cross the river and take back the land that had been promised to their father Abraham centuries before.  Today, home schooling parents have broken free from the bondage of Godless philosophies and are raising up the Joshua generation that will carry the battle over the Jordan--taking the banner of Christ back into American government, law, medicine, business, education and the arts, where God and His Word were once universally honored.  The enemies of God are trembling today at the thunderous approach of the Joshua generation!!

Gotta Love Those Preschoolers!

Gotta Love Those Preschoolers!

Marilyn Boyer has taught all fourteen of her children at home, so she has plenty of experience with any age group you can name.  But her very favorite age to teach is those eager, curious, exciting, challenging munchkins we call preschoolers.  This, Marilyn says is the time when we lay the foundation for greatness by pouring love and acceptance all over them—instead of treating them like a nuisance.  Preschoolers aren’t just little interruptions to be kept “occupied” while older siblings study.  This season in a child’s life is the time to tap into his huge potential by maximizing his natural love for learning and helping him to see that God is preparing him for a lifetime of important service.  Come and learn from Marilyn how to make the most of this brief but exciting time

Learning to Delight in Your Children

If you sometimes feel like homeschooling is drudgery, you can bet your kids feel the same way! It's such a temptation to stress over teaching predicate nominatives or the steps of division that we forget to delight in our children and make time to enjoy being with them. In this session, Marilyn shares how she and Rick have found this to actually be the key to instilling values that stick and building in them a heart for things of the Lord.

Pushing the Reset Button

This talk by 30 year home schooling veteran Marilyn Boyer is a breath of fresh air for the harried home schooling mom. Marilyn will help you renew, refresh, and refocus your vision for your ministry to your children. Learn how to relax and enjoy your home schooing years while at the same time training up dynamic young people equipped to impact their culture for Christ.

Hands-On Character Building
The sixth chapter of Deuteronomy tells us to teach the principles of Scripture to our children by talking of them when we lie down, rise up, sit in our house, and walk by the way. Further, we are to write God’s words as signs on our hands and phylacteries for our foreheads and on the doorposts of our houses and on our gate. How can these principles be applied today? This workshop shows how you can put Scripture on your "doorposts" (they physical structure of you home), your "phylacteries" (wearing apparel), and remind your children of the truth of God during the four natural learning times: bedtime, waking up, sitting at home and traveling. Dozens of projects including craft ideas, games, study projects and creative family devotions will be given to provide you with practical applications for your desire to train your children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Getting It All Done
Have you ever felt overwhelmed with the demands of parenting? Life is certainly a challenge for parents, and especially those who accept the added responsibility of home education. But there are ways to make life easier and more productive, and this workshop discusses some of those. Marilyn Boyer, mother of fourteen children and a veteran home educator of twenty-seven years' experience, shares her techniques for accomplishing a mammoth amount of housework while giving her children a superior education at the same time.

Home Educating with Babies and Toddlers and Loving It
It's a blessing but it can be stressing! Home schooling with tiny ones around the house is a special challenge, but one that many moms handle with great success. Come hear how Marilyn Boyer, mother of 14 and a home schooler of 22 years' experience, makes her little ones a valuable part of the team! (Note, this session has some overlap with Hands-on Character Building, so you may want to choose one or the other)

Holding their Hearts
Holding Their Hearts explains how the key to raising children who love God is in the heart-to-heart relationship between parent and child, where children are not just trained, but discipled.Take the time to give your children the security of knowing they have your heart. In so doing you are making it easier for them to freely give their heart back to their Creator, and that is our mission.Catch a vision of how you can reach and hold the heart of your child and build fulfilling family relationships that will be passed on through generations. This presentation can be given with PowerPoint or an overhead projector.

Home Education- What it's Done for Our Family
When the Boyers started their home education adventure in 1980, there were 4 children in the family, all ages 5 and under. Today there are 14 Boyer kids, several of them young adults and making an impact in God's calling for their lives. In this workshop, Marilyn tells in her own words and theirs why the Boyers (ALL OF THEM) are glad God led them into the lifestyle of home education. This presentation is available as either a powerpoint presentation or with the use of an overhead projector.

Rekindling The Fire of Our Founders by Marilyn Boyer

Their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honor!  America's Founding fathers were willing to sacrifice everything in order to give to their posterity "one nation under God."  Two centuries later, America and her leaders seem to have wandered astray from the Biblical principles on which our nation was founded.  Come and listen as historical writer Marilyn Boyer, author of For You They Signed, points the way back to the principles that made America great.  Teach your children to put God first in their lives and  reclaim our country's future by embracing the glory of her past!

Marilyn Boyer is no stranger to the joys and challenges of raising teenagers. With ten sons and daughters now having graduated from high school at home, Marilyn shares why she taught them herself from kindergarten through the high school years and why she wouldn't consider doing it any other way.

Obedience From the Heart
Nothing more blesses the heart of a parent than a child who obeys consistently and willingly. Many moms and dads however, miss the mark by trying to change behavior without changing the heart. Marilyn shows why the task of the loving parent is not merely to control outward behavior, but to build godly attitudes by ministering to the spirit of the child!

If My People... How We Can and Must Make a Difference
It seems that every day brings more bad news about the moral state of our country. Homosexuals are getting "married"; the Ten Commandments are thrown out of our courtrooms, the morale of the military is low and character is often lower, divorce consumes half of our marriages, and alarming numbers of teenagers and women are having children out of wedlock. Are we really being asked to define the word "marriage"? Are judges really rewriting the law as they want it instead of interpreting it as it is? Are we the only religious group that it's okay to discriminate against? How did things get so bad? Will it ever get better? What is the Christian's role? The apostle Paul admonished Timothy, "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believer." We are the salt of the earth, but when the salt has lost its savor, it's good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men. Society can get better, but it's up to us whether it will! This session takes a look at the problems of society and offers a sampling of practical ways we all can and should be involved to make a positive difference.

A Heritage of Godliness

A look at the lives and beliefs of our American Founding Fathers by Kate Boyer Who were America's founding fathers? What did they believe and how did their beliefs influence their way of life? This session examines the lives and attributes of some of the early patriots and our founding fathers, both the well-known and the little known. During their lifetime and for many years beyond, citizens desiring to be involved in government at any level were required to profess a belief in Almighty God. In 1848, a history textbook declared of Benjamin Rush (signer of the Declaration of Independence): "Through life, the Bible was a 'lamp to his feet' his guide in all things appertaining to his duty toward God and man." John Adams, 2nd president of the United States, declared that our republican form of government was established for a religious and a moral people, and that it is "wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Showing maturity of mind and character beyond their modern-day counterparts, these men bravely risked and in some cases gave their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor that this nation might have a birth of freedom and that honoring the laws of nature and of nature's God, government of the people, by the people, and for the people should not perish from the earth. If you've ever wondered why it's important to learn about people who lived two hundred years ago, this workshop is for you!

Come Forth as Gold- Making Sense of Suffering

When faced with the prospect of suffering, most of us would say with the Psalmist, "O that I had wings, like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest." No one enjoys suffering, but all of us endure it to some degree. Although we can't control our circumstances, we can control our heart's response to them. Drawing on difficult experiences from her own life, including the death of her brother to leukemia, and the lives of Bible characters and others, Kate illustrates how hard times make us either bitter or better. Many of us have been taught that it's a sin to ask "why?" But our loving Father doesn't delight in sending us through agonizing situations aimlessly or mysteriously. Instead, He wants us to realize that He has a plan for each life, and our best interests and His glory at heart as He trusts us with each difficult circumstance. He wants us to look for His purpose behind our pain. Your heart will be touched as we explore different scenarios of suffering that He allows for certain reasons, and challenged as we examine proper responses to His refining work in our lives. Discover that if you allow Him to, He'll bring some of your greatest blessings - and blessings to others through your life and testimony - from the crucible of pain. by Kate Boyer

Virtue, Proverbs 31-Style: Lessons I've Learned from my Mother
In the book of wisdom, Solomon says that a wise man will hear and increase learning. Titus 2:3-5 exhorts older women to teach younger women, “that the Word of God be not blasphemed.” In a day when role models are becoming fewer and farther between and the difference between women in the church and women in the world is becoming increasingly vague, a virtuous, Godly woman to learn from truly is more valuable than rubies. Kate shares lessons learned and insights gleaned both from her mother's spoken words and living example as a wife, mother of 14, home-school teacher, and home-based business owner on what it means – and what it takes – to be a Godly woman. by Kate Boyer

Remember Now Thy Creator- Reflections on my Home School Experience
Especially for young people. Home educated from preschool through twelfth grade, Kate Boyer is now a 22-year-old graduate looking back on her experience. Growing up in a large family, all of whom were home schooled, she understands the struggles facing home school students – from the seeming expectation of near-perfection on one hand to the stereotype of “odd” on the other hand; from a lifestyle of learning to go against the flow to a conditioned atmosphere of “thinking within the box”. Forming your beliefs, principles and standards, and then holding on to them in the “Christian” world where worldly is becoming normal and anything else is weird, the pressure to just be normal can be overpowering. But one day you might wake up as she did and realize that although you're achieving “normal” status in the eyes of others, you are unfulfilled and unhappy! What happened? Kate shares the story of her journey in this workshop, relating the attitudes she developed and decisions she made, both good and bad, explaining what she would do differently, as well as aspects she wouldn't change, if she could go back and do it all over again. Kate desires to see young people reach full potential for their life and make good use of each moment of their single years, as well as fulfilling the specific roles for men and women in God's society and living a God-fearing life in a godless world. You will be challenged to carefully consider before you make major decisions regarding college, career/occupation and life direction, to ascertain that you are doing not only what you truly want to do, but also what God has in His perfect plan for you!
